The “Glasgow Greenies” summer environmental activities programme for children is now well under way. The programme is aimed at children from all local primary schools aged 9-12, generally in P6 or P7 and combines environmental awareness with teamwork and confidence building. Children from six local schools are participating this year. The first event took place on 1 July at the Scottish Outdoor Education Centre at Dounans, Abefoyle, and was followed a week later by an eco-drama day in the DRCET Marquees set up in Danes Drive Park. A substantial part of the programme this year is being delivered in partnership with Outdoor Adventure (formerly Drumchapel Adventure Group, but now part of Glasgow Community Safety Services) and two events with Outdoor Adventure have also taken place – gorge walking and abseiling at Stockiemuir, canoeing at Loch Ard and pond dipping/nature walk/mountain biking at Pollok Park. As in previous years the Greenies plan to take part in the Glasgow Show on 31 July and 1 August where they will be carrying out recycling, and a further three events with Outdoor Adventure are planned before the start of term in August.
