For the last three weeks we have had some overseas volunteers helping out down at the Heart of Scotstoun community garden. The volunteers were participating in an Xchange Scotland international volunteering programme.

The volunteers – Deborah from Beligium, Sofie from the Czech Republic and Flavio from Switzerland plus Kirsty their Scottish team leader – were hosted by LINKES. LINKES is a local charity based in the high rise flats on Lincoln Avenue in Knightswood. They organise youth clubs, women’s groups, senior citizen’s groups and advice and support for the residents of the flats. Focus is on community-led social activities and support.

In addition to assisting LINKES the project will serve as an important inter-cultural exchange where young Scottish people will be given the opportunity to familiarise themselves with foreign cultures and languages. As part of their project, the volunteers will also be given the chance to better get to know Scotland, as well as Glasgow as a city.

The volunteers came down every Tuesday and Thursday morning and got stuck into a variety of work including continuing the ditch drainage, installing seated planters, cutting grass and even a bit of weeding! And amazingly it never rained for any of the sessions that they volunteered at, which is pretty good going given the summer we’ve had!!

Anyway a huge thanks to the volunteers and we hope to see them back in Glasgow sometime soon! You can check out all their good work below!
