As part of our monthly newsletter (you can subscribe here) we have a section called Friend Focus where we highlight the great work that is being undertaken by one of the many organisations that we work with.

This month’s Friend Focus is on Anniesland College, which is based in a new state-of-the-art campus on Hatfield Drive.

We have been working with Anniesland College for a good few years now on a range of different projects including:

  • Food waste composting
  • Bike fleet maintenance service
  • Pedal powered electricity generators
  • Attending their volunteer days and science days

The food waste composting project, which was originally funded by the Climate Challenge Fund, has so far diverted over 10 tonnes of food waste from landfill. Food waste is collected from various locations across the new College campus including the canteen, the student training kitchen, staff rooms, the coffee shop and the kids nursery.

The food waste is then mixed with waste wood shavings from the construction department and then all processed in a Rocket A900 in-vessel composter (shown below). This processes the waste material and turns it into a great compost product that is used by the horticulture department as a growing medium.

The students at the College have also helped put together the generators that we use for our pedal powered smoothie machine.

You can find out more about the courses on offer at the College on their website and you can read the latest about the proposed merger with Cardonald and Langside Colleges here.
