As part of our monthly newsletter (you can subscribe here) we have a section called Friend Focus where we highlight the great work that is being undertaken by one of the many organisations that we work with.

This month’s Friend Focus is on the Yoker Community Campus, which is based in Kelso Place.

Opened in August 2006, Yoker Community Campus provides a space for all people within the local area to meet, develop existing skills and gain new ones, participate in learning opportunities and information sessions and be more active.

The Campus provides a number of rooms and spaces for a variety of uses (we had our AGM there this year!)  including:

  • Computer & Information Zone providing open and free access to the Internet  to carry out job searches, study, leisure and advice and information.
  • Jobs Board with information on current employment opportunities within the local and wider area.  These are updated regularly and the Information & Computer zone can be used to find out more about the vacancies or apply.
  • Main hall suited to hosting presentations, events, general and public meetings (holds up to 150)
  • Fully equipped kitchen and café facility, available for hire for many uses including training.
  • Creche facility, fully equipped.
  • Digital Learning Centre
  • Flexible meeting, interviewing and training rooms available for community use and hire.
  • Three craft skills workshops which can be adapted for a variety of uses including dance and exercise, meetings and much more.
  • Newly opened beauty and nail facility

Marjory Smith, the Campus Development & Regeneration Officer, says,

“Yoker Community Campus continues to develop new and useful initiatives to welcome and involve the local community and those from further afield. It continues to host the DRC Youth Project which goes from strength to strength, meeting in our building three nights per week and the Campus staff are now working with youth workers to expand and develop experiences available.

New groups meeting in the building include a parent and toddler group with a play worker to develop health related activity; older people’s computer and internet classes – just watch them Skype!!; complementary therapies; women’s safety and confidence building classes; employability project courtesy of GRA…and loads more.

We are also developing a range of healthy eating initiatives involving young and old which will be in partnership with DRC Environment Trust and the DRC Youth Project.

We’ve also just produced our first newsletter so look out for copies dropping on your doorsteps soon!

At the Campus we are always up for discussion – any ideas welcome – and any local groups looking for a home for a night or a whole session will be made very welcome. Come along and have a chat, anything considered within reason!”
