As part of our monthly newsletter (you can subscribe here) we have a section called Friend Focus where we highlight the great work that is being undertaken by one of the many organisations that we work with.Whteinch Centre new logo

Our first Friend Focus of 2013 is The Whiteinch Centre, based along at Northinch Street just off Dumbarton Road.

The Whiteinch Centre was developed in response to a need for good community amenities and is now a vibrant and successful community asset, owned by the local people in the name of the Whiteinch Community Association, and supported by the local anchor organisation, the Whiteinch and Scotstoun Housing Association.

The Centre has been involved in the local community since 2006 and some 1550 people each year attend events and regularly use the facilities and services.

WhiteinchPictureThe facilities include a 150-seat multi-purpose hall, café, crèche, conference room, art room, IT suite and three general purpose rooms.  Available for hire by local groups and individuals for regular activities or special functions, the suite of rooms provide flexible and affordable local facilities, great for classes, weddings, birthday parties, conferences, etc.

The Centre offers a friendly, relaxed environment where local people can meet and access a range of services and activities delivered through our network of partner organisations. Over 30 local groups currently offer services in the Centre, including:

  • 13 weekly local addiction and support groups
  • 12 fitness and dance classes
  • 9 health and support activities in partnership with other organisations such as NHS, Lifelink, Weight Watchers, Weaning Fayre, etc.
  • Learning programmes including Get With Whiteinch, Glasgow Life Adults Literacy and Numeracy and foreign language classes for children delivered by Language Hub

They also offer social meeting space and a free internet access in the community café.  Teapots Café is run by a local sole trader and offers catering for any events within the building and to external events.

Following feedback from their Open Day in October 2012 they have developed exciting plans for 2013 around activities for young people, seniors and integration of ethnic minorities.

And they have a newly appointed Volunteer Coordinator who will be looking for volunteers who are happy to share their skills as tutors and for people who would like to get involved in day to day running of the Centre.

You can find out more about the Whiteinch Centre by dropping in to see them, calling them on 0141 950 4434, visiting their website, or their Facebook page or follow them on Twitter!
