As part of our monthly newsletter (you can subscribe here) we have a section called Friend Focus wFOVP_Logohere we highlight the great work that is being undertaken by one of the many organisations that we work with.

Our latest Friend Focus features Friends of Victoria Park, which is a group set up to protect and develop this valuable and popular community asset here in the West of Glasgow.

Friends of Victoria Park (FoVP) was established in 2009 so that local people could influence and contribute FOVP_cleanupto the future development and vision of the park. Since then they have been working closely with Glasgow City Council, to protect, conserve the park’s amenities, history, heritage and wildlife.

The group is currently made up of local people with a wide range of backgrounds and interests who are keen to explore the potential for new activities to revitalise the park, meet the needs of local people and their vision for the park. Currently, they have about 300 members.

FoVP members are highly active in the park.  Recent events that they have initiated or have been strongly associated with include:

  • several park clean-ups e.g. 2012’s pond clean up
  • restoration awareness and fund raising e.g. Victoria Park’s gate refurbishment, pond bridges restoration
  • park events e.g. 125th Anniversary event
  • plantings and bio-diversity activities e.g. bird box programme and pond’s soft edges
  • focus of community consultation about the park’s development for Glasgow City Council
  • park development projects e.g. the proposed community orchard
  • regular liaison with the Glasgow City Council on park management issues

FoVP welcome new members from any area of Glasgow to join them and participate in their activities.  Membership is free. To join simply email them at fovpglasgow@gmail.com or complete the online form on their website.

They are planning a number of activities in the coming months including an official opening of the refurbished Victorian park gates, a park clean up and their AGM.  They will email/mail all members about these events and they are also publicised on their website www.fovp-glasgow.co.uk and on posters around the park, so please get involved!VictoriaPark

FoVP have also been supportive of our Glasgow West Community map and they have added a lot of features in the park to the map – click on the image on the left to view the map.

If you are involved with a local park and you are interested in setting up a ‘Friends of’ group then please visit the Council’s website for more information.
