As part of our monthly newsletter (you can subscribe here) we have a section called Friend Focus where we highlight the great work that is being undertaken by one (or more) of the many organisations that we work with.DoWlogo_white_linear

Our latest Friend Focus features our own De’ils On Wheels! (Maybe we should have called it Family Focus this month!)

De’ils On Wheels is a community bicycle workshop located in Scotstoun in the West of Glasgow and which offers a range of services and activities for the benefit of the local community.

DoW_Workshop_01_20130411The project has been through various phases of development and the workshop was closed down back in April 2012 after the current funding had come to an end. In March 2013 we were successful in securing funding from Awards from All Scotland which allowed us to re-open the workshop and getting old bikes back on the road.

We provide a range of activities and services for the benefit of local people and the local community including:

Paul, the De'ils On Wheels bike mechanic, presenting the donator of our 100th bike with his free tickets to the Scottish Bike Show!

Donations: we accept donations of unwanted bikes from across the community. These are then repaired and refurbished and sold back in to the community at low cost. We recently received our 100th donation! To celebrate reaching this milestone we are running a prize draw – anyone that donates a bike to us between now and 31 March 2014 will be entered into a draw to win tickets to the Scottish Bike Show!

Volunteering and Training: we are able to provide a range of volunteering opportunities including workshop assistant, bike mechanic and bike collection assistant. The volunteers we have had over the past year have made an invaluable contribution to the success of the project. We are also able to offer training where appropriate and in the past year this has included Emergency First Aid at Work,  Moving and Handling, Customer Service, Visual Merchandising and Velotech Bike Maintenance certificates.

DoW_MGR_PopUp_Bike8_Jun13Sale of second hand bikes: a core service is the sale of second hand bikes. We are working towards being accredited by the Revolve Reuse quality standard. All of bikes go through a rigorous safety check and any necessary repairs by our qualified mechanics. All of our bikes come with a 30 day sales promise so our customers can be reassured that in the unlikely event that they experience any problems with the bike we will get this resolved for them.

Servicing and Repairs: we offer an affordable and accessible servicing and repair service which is proving to be very popular with a wide range of customers.

Dr Bike bike check service: as part of our outreach programme we can provide a Dr Bike service for various situations including community events, schools, Housing Associations tenant support services.

DoW_Refurb_03Workshop improvements: this year we have undertaken several improvements to the workshop including some significant refurbishments work that were provided in-kind by Glasgow Housing Association and Clydeside Tenant Partnership. The improvements have resulted in a better and safer working environment for our staff and volunteers as well as a better retail environment for our customers.

Bike collections: we work in partnership with Glasgow City Council, The Bike Station, Common Wheel and Gorbals Recycles to collect unwanted bikes from the Councils recycling centres. This is done on a rota basis so one organisation will collect the bikes from all 4 centres and then the next organisation and so on. To date, between us, we have collected over 1000 bikes from the recycling centres.

DoW_RealHeroes_GroupDes_FotorAward nominations: last year we were fortunate to be nominated for a Finding Scotland’s Real Heroes Award and we made it through to the final three for the Best Environmental Project in Scotland. Although we didn’t win we had an amazing experience when STV and Des Clarke spent a day filming with us, we appeared on the telly and we also got to go through to Edinburgh for the awards ceremony.

Customer feedback: so what do our customers have to say about us? Well the feedback to date has been very encouraging…

  • Overall how satisfied are you with the service we provided you? – 100% extremely satisfied
  • How likely are you to use our services in the future? – 100% extremely or very likely
  • How likely are you to recommend De’ils On Wheels to people you know? – 100% extremely likely

“Being able to buy an affordable second hand bike. Knowing it had been checked over. Having a selection to choose from. Supporting a charity/social enterprise and recycling rather than buying new.”
