As part of our monthly newsletter (you can subscribe here) we have a section called Friend Focus where we highlight the great work that is being undertaken by one (or more) of the many organisations that we work with.DrumLIFE_logo

Our latest Friend Focus features Drumchapel LIFE!

Drumchapel L.I.F.E. started life as a Healthy Living Centre in May 2002, one of over 400 such centres in the UK. The organisation grew out of the Drumchapel Social Inclusion Partnership’s Health and Social Issues Implementation Group, and was set up to address health and well being priorities for people living in the G15 postcode area (Drumchapel and Blairdardie). It now also operates across the G13 and G14 postcode areas.

Drumchapel L.I.F.E. operate to a number of objectives and targets and within four central themes:

  • Food and Diet
  • Active Lifestyles (including sport and physical activity)
  • Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco and
  • Mental Health and Well Being.

Fruit_VegetablesOver the last couple of years we have also been involved in delivering a Big Lottery funded programme aimed at improving the financial capability, financial management skills and financial sustainability of disadvantaged people. Part of this programme includes support to reduce household outgoings, by saving on energy costs, support to cook healthier meals at a low cost and support to become involved in growing and using vegetables as a way to supplement low incomes.

GreenGymLogoOver and above our focus on health and well being, we are involved in work which has a specific focus on the environment including, the Wheel Fix It bike project, supporting the West Glasgow Green Gym and a number of community gardening projects and have secured a large investment from the Big Lottery Fund to build a large scale community garden in Drumchapel in the coming months.

Although designated as a Healthy Living Centre, we have no physical ‘centre’. Instead, we work partnership with groups and agencies to either develop or facilitate the development of a broad range of projects and activities to address our priorities. We have an annual ‘seed fund’ to help new and innovative activity to get off the ground and attract funding from a variety of sources to allow positive action to take place.20140319_133400

Drumchapel L.I.F.E. also runs a community facility, the Phoenix Centre, on behalf of Glasgow City Council. The centre is a busy local hub hosting a range of groups, clubs and activities for people of all ages. There is also a small community garden in the grounds which is free for anyone to get involved.

The organisation is very much an anchor organisation enabling and facilitating delivery on the ground by providing assistance to bring investment into the area and providing development support. We also work with a range of organisations at a strategic level to persuade them to integrate health and well being topics into their mainstream activities for the benefit of people in the area.

We have a small staff team and are always pleased to support new work which meets our aims and priorities. We are a voluntary organisation, a Scottish Charity and a Company Limited By Guarantee with an elected Board of Directors.
