VictoriaPark_BlaesFollowing on from the Council’s decision to put an area of Victoria Park up for lease, Friends of Victoria Park, are organising a special event – Hands Around the Park – at 2pm on Sunday 21 September when they will be joining hands around the area of the Park that has been recently advertised for commercial lease by Ryden.

Save_VictoriaParkA FoVP representative said. “While awareness of this potential risk to our beautiful park is still low, it has come as an great shock to everyone who has heard about it. The closing date for bids in response to Ryden’s advert is the 26 of September 2014. The Land Services Department will then consult with ‘interested parties’ on which of these bids should be considered.”

“We believe the park is common good land and must be preserved for this and future generations.”

“To show the City Council how determined we are to maintain this site as ‘dear green’ space that is not for commercial development, we would ask you to come along with your friends and family and join hands with us on the former blaes pitches (Westland Drive/Victoria Park Drive North corner of the park).”

“Handmade placards with appeals to save our park, adults and children with painted faces showing trees and wildflowers would be very welcome. Runners, dog walkers and other representatives of those who appreciate and use the park regularly are also encouraged to attend. We need you to come to get a good turnout.”

“Please make every effort to come along on Sunday 21st. Prompt action by local residents is essential to save the park from developers.”
