TescoSouthStreet_03Last week Tesco announced that it was shutting 43 stores across the UK and it is also shelving plans to open a further 49 new “very large” stores, 8 of which are in Scotland. We believe that this includes the superstore planned for the former Meadowside Granary site on South Street.

The proposed superstore was given planning permission by Glasgow City Council on 5 Oct 2012 (Ref No 11/01264/DC). The planning consent only lasts for 3 years so this is due to expire on 5 Oct 2015.

wildflowers-3In the meantime what could the community do with this space? The Council operates the award winning Stalled Spaces programme which focuses on the temporary use of vacant land, under utilised open space and sites earmarked for development though stalled. Maybe we could turn the former Meadowside site into a fabulous wildflower meadow! Let us know what you think in the comments below!
