DSC05525As part of the nationwide celebrations happening for Volunteers’ Week volunteers from across the local area came along to a Volunteer Garden Party in the Community Garden at Kingsway last week. Although Volunteers’ Week runs from 1 – 7 June the wonderful Scottish summer caused our event to happen a little later…

This event was a way for us to say a huge thank you to our volunteers for their hard work and amazing contributions to all the different local organisations over the past year. Volunteers came along from a wide range of local organisations and groups including Kingsway Court Health & Wellbeing Centre, the Whiteinch Centre, Glasgow Wood Recycling, Whiteinch and Scotstoun Community Councils, Whiteinch & Scotstoun Housing Association’s Energy Advice Project, DRC Youth Project and the Whiteinch News. The Kingsway Court Womens’ Group provided everyone with delicious food, and volunteers from different organisations received certificates recognising their commitment and contributions.

Volunteers are involved in a huge range of activities across the West of the city including youth work, peer education, community clean-ups, environmental action days, bike repair, committee work, befriending, office and IT support, welfare rights and much more. The time, enthusiasm and skills that volunteers bring to organisations make a huge contribution to so many people’s lives, so taking part in Volunteers’ Week is a way of celebrating these contributions and showing volunteers how much we value them.

As well as a host of different events happening across the UK during Volunteers’ Week, the organisers also asked people to talk about the causes they care about, share their experiences of volunteering and encourage others to get involved – if you want to check out some of these stories take a look at the hashtag #ivolunteer on social media.
