nextbike that runs city bike-sharing schemes is celebrating hitting its 500,000th rental in the UK.

The firm, nextbike, recorded the landmark trip in Glasgow, where it operates what it describes as one of its most successful schemes. The rider on the journey travelled from Bellgrove Station to George Square in the city centre.

Julian Scriven, managing director of nextbike UK, said it was an important milestone, “We are delighted with how well the scheme has been received generally in the UK and even more so to see it used so comprehensively in Glasgow by people from all walks of life,”

“There is the assumption that rental bikes are mainly for tourists but we have found that city dwellers are among the highest number of users, making the most of them for all kinds of journeys throughout the day and night.”

Councillor Anna Richardson, city convener for sustainability & carbon reduction, said: “As an avid cyclist, I’m delighted that Glasgow bike users have reached this amazing milestone.

The bike hire scheme in the city is a wonderful way to encourage more residents and visitors to use alternative modes of transport and help reduce our carbon footprint as well.’
