Are you affected by the school run at your school? Dumbarton Road Corridor Environment Trust (DRCET) and De’ils On Wheels are hosting a half-day School Run Summit on the morning of Wednesday 20 September at Heart of Scotstoun Community Centre, 64 Balmoral Street, Glasgow G14 0BL

The event will bring together a wide range of people and organisations from the G13 and G14 postcode areas to share knowledge and experience of the school run. This will include pupils, teachers, parents, parent councils, local residents, community councils, Council officers, elected members and other interested parties.

The event will look at the wider community to see if this provides opportunities for alternative solutions to the school run issue such as:

  • How can we work more closely across the community to address the school run?
  • How can the school run help improve pupil attendance and attainment?
  • How can we better promote school initiatives to tackle the school run?
  • How can we increase active travel and reduce cars and vans on the school run?

This event is free to attend but booking is required! You can book online at

For more info please contact DRCET on 0141 433 0427 or email

The Hands Up Scotland Survey looks at how pupils across Scotland travel to school and is the largest national dataset on school travel.  The 2017 survey will take place from Monday 11 until Friday 15 September with schools selecting one day to carry out the survey.

Each September, schools across Scotland complete the survey in class by asking their pupils ‘How do you normally travel to school?’. Local authority officers distribute the survey to schools and return pupil responses to Sustrans for collation, analysis and reporting.

The results provide a valuable annual snapshot of school travel and are used by Sustrans, Transport Scotland and other groups to inform policy areas, monitor trends in school travel over time, and provide information relevant to a variety of health, transport and education initiatives.

For more information about the Hands Up Scotland survey please visit the Sustrans website where you can also download all the information for the 2017 survey. You can see the headline results from 2016 below.

Four staff members from local environmental charity Dumbarton Road Corridor Environment Trust (DRCET) and De’ils On Wheels recently Braved the Shave to raise funds for DRCET and the Beatson Cancer Charity.

DRCET staff Neil Lovelock, Liz Dorward, Sarah Burgess and Paul Morrice all went under the clippers at the Brave the Shave joint fundraiser, which was held in late March at the Heart of Scotstoun Community Centre, which also held a cake sale to raise more money.

Neil Lovelock, DRCET Project Manager said,

“The response to the fundraiser has been totally overwhelming and we absolutely smashed our £2000 target – who would have thought a wee bit of hair could have raised over £6000! We are delighted to be able to present this cheque for £3000 to the Beatson Cancer Charity, an organisation which has provided much needed support to us in recent times.”

“A massive thanks to Lu at Battlefield Barbers; all the team at Heart of Scotstoun; to everyone that baked something for us; to everyone that came along to cheer us on; a huge thanks to Paul, Liz and Sarah for helping to turn my madcap idea into a reality and going above and beyond; and of course a huge, huge, huge thank you for everyone that sponsored us – it is very much appreciated!

Kirsty McDonald, Challenges & Community Fundraiser for Beatson Cancer Charity said,

“On behalf of Beatson Cancer Charity, I’d like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Dumbarton Road Corridor Environment Trust for their incredible support and real determination to beat cancer. The Brave the Shave was a brilliant initiative and the funds raised by the team will have a direct impact on patients and families affected by cancer in our community. I would also like to thank everyone who very kindly sponsored and supported the team for all their generosity.”

The Beatson Cancer Charity are determined to beat cancer and committed to securing significant funding to support and enhance the treatment, care and wellbeing of current, former and future cancer patients and their families.
