Cycling_manifestoA ban on pavement parking, high quality cycling infrastructure, a 20mph limit on local streets and an overhaul of the Highway Code were amongst the measures recommended in a new manifesto released on 28 June from an alliance of the UK’s major organisations dedicated to walking and cycling.

The alliance of the Bicycle Association, Cycling UK, the Ramblers, British Cycling, Living Streets and Sustrans, has a combined membership of more than 330,000 people and span every form of walking and cycling, from the school run to Olympic success.

Launching their ‘Moving the Nation’ manifesto at a major conference on cycling in Manchester, they unveiled a new vision of a future where everybody in the UK can live, work and play in places that are ‘healthy, vibrant and that make walking and cycling the natural choice for short journeys’.

It doesn’t seem like it has been almost a since Volunteers Week was in full swing! June has been a busy month but we made sure we took the time to celebrate with our volunteers and thank them for their huge contribution to what we do.

On the Tuesday we held a volunteer lunch for our volunteers at the Heart of Scotstoun Community Centre were a great spread was put on by The Cherry Tree Cafe team.

On the Wednesday we also held a wee celebration up at the Applefield Garden at Gartnavel Royal Hospital where the Green Gym were along to lend us a hand.

We also had a special celebration as one of our long serving volunteers achieved a significant milestone just before Volunteers Week – over 800 hours volunteering with us! Absolutely amazing – thank you!

A massive thanks to all the volunteers that contribute to and support our work – it is very much appreciated! You can check out some of the photos below!

Corpus Christi Primary School in Knightswood has some wheel-y great news – they have just become a Cycle Friendly Primary School, a nationally recognised award from Cycling Scotland. Corpus Christi is only the 9th primary school in Glasgow and the 350th in Scotland to achieve the Award.

The school has been working really hard over the past few months and has really lived up to it’s motto – We Try Our Best To Be The Best. The school, which has over 400 pupils, has been undertaking a range of cycling and active travel related activities as they worked towards the award. Two groups of pupils have completed their Bikeability Level 2 on road training; the Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) have undertaken a survey of teachers and parents that was used to help develop the School Travel Plan; pupils have attended a School Run Summit; they have undertaken a zig-zag campaign and pupils also took part in the Council’s Clean Air Day celebrations.

The School celebrated their achievements with a Bike Day for the whole school which saw guest speakers Markus Stitz (the first person to cycle around the world on a singlespeed bike) and Charline Joiner (Scottish racing cyclist and Commonwealth Games silver medalist) bring their bikes to school to speak to the pupils about their experiences.

Glasgow Wood Recycling, a thriving social enterprise based in Whiteinch, has recently achieved the nationally recognised Cycle Friendly Employer Award by demonstrating a clear commitment to increasing cycling for staff, volunteers and trainees. Achieving the award was made possible with funding from the Cycle Friendly Employer Development Fund.

Glasgow Wood Recycling was assessed against a range of criteria – they have a cycling champion, they have improved their cycling facilities including installing a new cycle shelter (made from recycled wood!), bought tools and a bike stand, bought a pool bike and have undertaken bike maintenance training. All clearly demonstrating that they fully deserved this Award.

Glasgow Wood Recycling is the 153rd workplace in Glasgow to achieve the award and they join over 525 Cycle Friendly Employers throughout Scotland. In addition, Glasgow Wood Recycling entered a team into the recent Glasgow and Clyde Cycle Challenge which took place throughout May. The team finished second overall cycling over 4000kms and one of the GWR team finished third in the individual standings, cycling nearly 1200km!
