ApplefieldWe will be hosting weekly volunteer gardening sessions every Thursday at Gartnavel Applefield garden every Thursday until 31 May. The sessions will start at 10.00am and finish at 12.30pm.

Gartnavel Applefield garden contributes to improving the environment around the Gartnavel site for the enjoyment of patients, staff and local people.

Volunteers will be able to help with a wide range of tasks including building and installing raised beds, preparation and filling of raised beds, installing a polytunnel, landscaping the gardens and general weeding.

If you want to come along to any of the sessions please get in touch or you can just turn up on the day. As the work is outdoors, please dress for the weather.

Sustrans Scotland will be holding a wildflower meadow creation volunteer workday from 10:30am to 3:30pm on Monday 16 April just past the entrance to the National Cycle Network at the end of Greenlaw Road, Yoker G14 0PG.

The day will look at habitat management to encourage wildflowers. As part of the workday we will talk about why to create and manage wildflower meadows and how to go about it and what tools to use, as well as about tool care and health and safety. We will then spend the day removing invading scrub, targeted wildflower seed sowing and potentially wildflower plug planting.

Please bring:

  • Sturdy shoes, preferably boots
  • Clothes appropriate for the weather
  • (Some!) muscles and (lots of) enthusiasm
  • Packed lunch

Sustrans will provide tools; protective equipment, e.g. gloves; tea, coffee and biscuits.

Please remember that we encourage sustainable travel – if possible, please consider cycling or walking to us, or using public transport. The nearest train station is Yoker. Otherwise, please consider car sharing.

Rounds 7 and 8 of the 2018 HSBC UK | BMX National Series are being held on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 June 2018 at the brand new Glasgow BMX Centre  Knightswood, Archerhill Road, Glasgow G13.

This will be the first major event to be hosted at the new Glasgow BMX Centre in Knightswood and volunteer marshals are required to ensure the safe running of the event – no experience necessary although the minimum age is 16yrs.

The event will see around 2000 people including competitors, spectators and event support arrive at the facility for two days of fast paced racing at this world class BMX facility.

green-gym-6The Green Gym is about healthy people and healthy places where volunteers meet up once a week to work together on improving local green spaces around West Glasgow.

RSPB Scotland are running the Glasgow Wildlife Garden Festival celebrating Glasgow’s green spaces from Saturday 12 May until Sunday 3 June. In partnership with Glasgow City Council, partners, organisations and community gardens right across the city, to celebrate Glasgow Garden Festivals 30th Anniversary of bringing the festival to green spaces across the city and raising awareness of the wildlife on your doorstep.

The programme is taking shape and a wide range of community groups are involved, representing Parks and green spaces all over the city. Many of these events are being run by different groups and community gardens, which are working in partnership with RSPB Scotland to bring you the Glasgow Wildlife Garden Festival at locations across the city.

If you would like to be involved all you need to do is to register your event at the link below and send it to them by the 2 April so your activity can be featured in the Glasgow Wildlife Garden Festival 2018 programme.

Partick Action on Litter are holding two more community clean ups in the next few. The first is at 10am on Sunday 25 March and the second is at 530pm on Monday 9 April. All equipment is provided and the meeting point is 14 Fortrose Street, Partick G11 5NS.

Help your gallant band of local litter-activists to improve our streets after a wide-ranging February event which cleared 30 bags of rubbish from Stewartville Street, Gardner Street, Lawrie Street, Chancellor Street, White Street. Lawrence Street and Mansfield Park. Prettify Partick’s pavements! Sweep the scum off the sidewalks! Remove rubbish! Fight filth! Defeat detritus! Wage war on carelessly-discarded waste! All equipment provided! All welcome! Don’t just lament the problem, act to become part of the solution…

Victoria Park Working Group are hosting a family friendly Easter Event from 10am to 12pm on Sunday 1 April in Victoria Park, 12 Victoria Park Dr N, Glasgow G14 9NN

Proceedings get rolling at the Main Gates. Bring an egg to roll; bring your friends; bring your family and see what fun Victoria Park is! Other activities include:

  • Easter Egg Rolling
  • An introduction to the pond’s birdlife, including the correct way to feed them
  • A look at the fossils in the Fossil Grove
  • Colouring In/Drawing & Light Refreshments in the Curling Clubhouse
