Glasgow Allotments Forum is holding an event to celebrate 100 years of allotments in Glasgow. The event will be held from 11.30am to 3pm on Sunday 8 October at the Kinning Park Complex, 43 Cornwall Street, Glasgow G41 1BA

The Celebration event will have produce, bakes, displays, kid’s activities, cafe, Awards, discussions and will finish with a small ceildh.

There will be a discussion about the Northlight project for a WW1 plot in Pollock park next to the trenches – a really exciting project and ties in with all the centenary celebrations. There will also be Now & Then discussions about changes over the last 100 years and in some cases what hasn’t changed.

  • Produce/Seeds what has changed in what we plant?
  • Politics – the Food Growing Strategy – has it come round a full circle?
  • People – what the plot-holders used to do apart from garden

And there will be the annual awards and a small ceilidh to finish!

One Big Picnic One Big Community is a free event for the people by the people from 12-4pm on Sunday 3 September in George Square.

The aim of the event is to bring people together by creating a space for sharing food and a wee blether, sitting next to each other, showing understanding to differences regardless of background, cultural, religious, sexual orientation, social or educational status, homelessness or wealth. Highlighting Glasgow is indeed a city of caring people – people make Glasgow!

The event brings together community projects which prepare and serve free meals/provide food parcels on a regular basis  to those in need, such as the elderly, homeless and destitute. We believe that everyone has the right to good accessible food and should be treated fairly and with dignity. Therefore we will be serving wonderful dishes from around the world to all.

Unfortunately the organisers have had to cancel this event due to the weather forecast for strong winds and even stronger gusts which are well above acceptable limits for the safe use of inflatables (bouncy castles etc) and borderline acceptable limits for the safe use of open fronted marquees. It is hoped the event will be re-organised for later in the year.

Volunteers’ Week is an annual celebration of the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK – and this year it’s taking place from the Thu 1 to Wed 7 June 2017. It’s an opportunity for everyone to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers that make the world a better place.

Here at DRCET we involve volunteers in all the work that we do including workshop mechanism and assistants, community clean up assistants, Neighbourhood Improvement Volunteers (NIVs) and community cycling champions.

We also want to recruit volunteers across each of the community council areas we cover (Scotstoun, Whiteinch, Yoker, Thornwood, Knightswood, Jordanhill and Broomhill) to promote a range of environmentally friendly actions from recycling to picking up litter – you’ll lead the way and encourage others to join in.

We’re also looking for local people to join our Board – so if you are interested in improving the local area and would like to help develop DRCET then we’d like to hear from you.

You can contact Sarah on sarah@dumbartonroad.com for more information.
