Glasgow Wood Recycling, a thriving social enterprise based in Whiteinch, has recently achieved the nationally recognised Cycle Friendly Employer Award by demonstrating a clear commitment to increasing cycling for staff, volunteers and trainees. Achieving the award was made possible with funding from the Cycle Friendly Employer Development Fund.

Glasgow Wood Recycling was assessed against a range of criteria – they have a cycling champion, they have improved their cycling facilities including installing a new cycle shelter (made from recycled wood!), bought tools and a bike stand, bought a pool bike and have undertaken bike maintenance training. All clearly demonstrating that they fully deserved this Award.

Glasgow Wood Recycling is the 153rd workplace in Glasgow to achieve the award and they join over 525 Cycle Friendly Employers throughout Scotland. In addition, Glasgow Wood Recycling entered a team into the recent Glasgow and Clyde Cycle Challenge which took place throughout May. The team finished second overall cycling over 4000kms and one of the GWR team finished third in the individual standings, cycling nearly 1200km!

Over the past year we have been working with Heart of Scotstoun to develop the land around the community centre and as you can see it’s looking blooming marvellous!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

To date several raised beds have been installed and planted with hedging, various plants, a few vegetables, some strawberries and three apple trees in the beds at the back of the building.

All the work has been undertaken by volunteers. There are currently two volunteer sessions a week – on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10am until midday. If you are interested in volunteering in the garden then please contact us.

Heart of Scotstoun has recently secured funding from the North West Open Spaces and Environment Programme for phase 3 of the development. This will be focusing on finishing the creche garden, developing a sensory garden and the land around the perimeter of the car park  so keep you eyes peeled for more developments!

The raised beds have been supplied by the nice people at Glasgow Wood Recycling and the plants from the guys up at Alderman Road Community Gardens.

Many thanks to all the volunteers that have contributed to the landscaping to date – we really appreciate your efforts!
