International Women’s Day… and Cycling.

A very happy International Women’s Day to you all! On this most excellent day and also the centenary of the Women’s Suffrage Act being passed, we would like to share some facts on women and cycling with you to celebrate.

Did you know that the bicycle is considered instrumental to the emancipation of women? Not only did the transportation and independence it provides give immense freedom to women at the turn of the century, but it was also central to many of the campaigns run by the suffrage movements. The Cycling Scouts division, for instance, was formed in 1907 to help spread the message of suffrage wider afield to urban areas.

Following the local council elections in May GoBike sent a letter to all 84 of the newly elected Glasgow Councillors offering them a tour of the city or their ward, by bike or by foot in order “to encourage Councillors to be aware to the needs of cycling and cyclists in Glasgow as they carry out their council duties.”

To date 21 Councillors have responded and tours have been completed in 7 of the 23 wards in the city including Ward 12 Victoria Park.

GoBike – Strathclyde’s Cycle Campaign – in association with Pedal On Parliament presents GoBike Call for Action campaign workshop.

The workshop will take place from 10.30am to 4.30pm on Saturday 29 July at City Park campus, 368 Alexandra Parade, Dennistoun, Glasgow G31 3Au. Tickets to this exciting campaigning event are free but limited – book your place now!
