Go Bike, the Strathclyde cycle campaign, have been undertaking cycling and walking tours of each electoral ward with local councillors. At the start of December we joined in with the tour of Ward 13 Garscadden and Scotstounhill.

Two of the four local Councillors for Scotstounhill/Garscadden, Michael Cullen and Chris Cunningham, joined GoBike committee member, Alasdair Macdonald and DRCETs Neil Lovelock for the tour.

The tour started and finished from Heart of Scotstoun Community Centre and covered over 13 km around the ward area. There is some really good cycling infrastructure in the Ward, in particular the traffic section of the National Cycle Network, and further improvements are planned as part of the Knightswood BMX track development.

However, there are also areas where things can be improved and in particular linking these good pieces of infrastructure together is also important.

The Councillors were also given copies of the Cycling UK’s publication Space for Cycling guide for decision makers.

You can see details of the route cycled in the image below and on the Go Bike website. There are also some additional photos and some of the tweets that were sent!

The local Councillors in the area run regular, monthly surgeries for members of the public to pop along and raise issues or ask them questions. Most of the surgeries take place in public places such as schools and community centres. Click on the links below for details of your local Councillor’s surgeries.

Ward 12 Victoria Park (made up of Whiteinch, Jordanhill, Broomhill and Thornwood community councils areas)

Ward 13 Garscadden and Scotstounhill (made up of Yoker, Scotstoun and Knightswood community council areas)

Local primary school pupils made a significant contribution to the success of the first School Run Summit for west Glasgow, which was hosted earlier this week by local charity Dumbarton Road Corridor Environment Trust (DRCET) and De’ils On Wheels at the Heart of Scotstoun Community Centre.

The pupils, many of whom are Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs), joined over 40 other people who attended the School Run Summit, to look at how they could work together more effectively to address the school run issue and make the streets in and around local schools in the G11 to G15 postcode areas safer for all.

The primary school pupils told people about the great initiatives they are involved in including the JRSO programme, BikeAbility, the zig-zag campaign, the parking pledge, walking buses and park and stride schemes. Bankhead, Corpus Christi and Garscadden (now part of Clyde Primary) Primary Schools were all awarded the Glasgow City Council’s Lord Provost’s Road Safety Award in September.

Construction work is underway on a new £3.7 million Olympic standard BMX track being built in Kinghtswood area of Glasgow ahead of the 2018 European Championships – an exciting new multi-sport event bringing together some of the continent’s leading sports.

The new BMX Centre at Knightswood Recreation Ground is the only permanent venue being constructed for use at Glasgow 2018 and will be Scotland’s only World and Olympic standard BMX track. Work is expected to be complete by late spring next year, after which the venue will host a number of test events in the lead up to Glasgow 2018.

Completion of Knightswood BMX Centre will mean Glasgow is the only city in the world with venues capable of hosting all four Olympic cycling discipline events (BMX, MTB, Road and Track) within its boundary. The others are the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome at the Emirates Arena (Track), Cathkin Braes Mountain Bike Trails (MTB) and the city’s streets (Road).
