zws903-lfhw-ewwr-facebook-banner-2016The European Week for Waste Reduction runs from Saturday 19 to Sunday 27 November 2016 and the theme of this year’s European Week for Waste Reduction is ‘Use-less Packaging’.

Some packaging has its uses like keeping food fresher for longer but packaging waste in Scotland is an unavoidable issue. We throw away 208 million disposable coffee cups every year. If we stacked them end to end that would be the equivalent length of Loch Ness – 674 times over! What other packaging can you think of that is useless or wasteful?

Zero Waste Scotland are the official organisers of the week in Scotland and are encouraging businesses, educational establishments, voluntary organisations, charities and retailers to make a change to everyday behaviour to reduce the amount of food waste and packaging waste produced. De’ils On Wheels will be popping up at The Whiteinch Centre this Saturday 16 November from DoW_PopUp_Whiteinch_FbookImage10.30am to 12.30pm. The event, which is part of the European Week for Waste Reduction, will be promoting reuse and you will be able to enjoy:

  • a reused bike sale – come along and grab a bargain in the run up to Christmas!
  • a FREE Dr Bike check – bring your bike along and we will give it a free check over!
  • donate your old bike – if you have a bike that you no longer need then please bring it along and donate it to De’ils On Wheels!

Drumchapel LIFE in partnership with Home Energy Scotland will be holding a FREE energy savingDrum LIFE logo advice event – Get Ready for Winter – from 11am to 3pm on Saturday 2 November at the Drumchapel Community Centre in Kinfauns Drive.

We will be along at the event with our pedal powered smoothies to help people learn about energy awareness and energy efficiency in a fun and interactive way.

This month our food waste project at Glasgow Clyde College Anniesland Campus reached a new milestone when it passed the 20 tonnes mark.Anniesland_Rocket

The food waste which includes preparation waste, unsold food and uneaten food scraps, has all been diverted from landfill providing the College with both financial and environmental savings.

This week De’ils On Wheels received it’s 50th donated bike since we re-opened in the Sprin50-Finestg. This means we are avergaging two donations a week which is brilliant.

We are always looking for more donations and it would be great if we could reach 100 donations by Christmas!

Recently we went on a study visit to Bute as part of the Glasgow Social Enterprise Network (GSEN). Along with five other GSEN members we set off from Glasgow Central on the train to Wemyss Bay before being transported across the Firth of Clyde courtesy of CalMac on the MV Bute.GSEN_Logo

The visit was hosted by the Argyll & Bute Social Enterprise Network, which exists to support Argyll and Bute’s thriving social enterprises and whilst therre we were able to network with about a dozen ABSEN members.
