Local primary school pupils made a significant contribution to the success of the first School Run Summit for west Glasgow, which was hosted earlier this week by local charity Dumbarton Road Corridor Environment Trust (DRCET) and De’ils On Wheels at the Heart of Scotstoun Community Centre.

The pupils, many of whom are Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs), joined over 40 other people who attended the School Run Summit, to look at how they could work together more effectively to address the school run issue and make the streets in and around local schools in the G11 to G15 postcode areas safer for all.

The primary school pupils told people about the great initiatives they are involved in including the JRSO programme, BikeAbility, the zig-zag campaign, the parking pledge, walking buses and park and stride schemes. Bankhead, Corpus Christi and Garscadden (now part of Clyde Primary) Primary Schools were all awarded the Glasgow City Council’s Lord Provost’s Road Safety Award in September.

Following our recent strategic review DRCET has widened our core operating area to cover two full electoral Wards – Ward 13 Garscadden / Scotstounhill and Ward 12 Victoria Park. And moving forward DRCET will be using the Place Standard to evaluate the quality of this area.

The Place Standard can evaluate places that are well-established, undergoing change, or still being planned. The tool can also help users to identify their priorities.

The tool is simple to use and consists of 14 topics (shown below) which cover both the physical and social elements of a place. Prompts are provided to help users answer the questions and when all 14 questions have been completed, the results are shown in a simple diagram as shown above and below.

We would appreciate it if you could take 5-10 minutes to complete the survey, which is available online at:

www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/drcet-place-standard

or you can download a PDF version here DRCET_PlaceStandard_Survey_v3_Mar17.

The DRCET Board has recently reviewed and update our core operational area. This follows the recent Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland Fifth Electoral Review which saw several changes to Ward boundaries in the city, and in particular in the local area with the creation of the new Victoria Park ward.

Our new revised core operational area covers two complete wards – Ward 13 Garscadden/Scotstounhill and Ward 12 Victoria Park – which in turn covers 7 community council areas – Yoker, Scotstoun and Knightswood in Ward 13 and Whiteinch, Jordanhill, Broomhill and Thornwood in Ward 12. Just over 54,000 people live in this area – approx 9% of the population of Glasgow.

When DRCET was first set up the operational area covered the Dumbarton Road Corridor small area Social Inclusion Partnership which covered Yoker, part of Scotstoun and Whiteinch. Then with the arrival of the Glasgow Community Planning Partnership and the multi-member wards this changed again to take in all of Scotstoun and also Knightswood.
